If you follow along on Instagram & keep track of the calendar here, I am a big fan of Avon Lake Public Library. Not only does the library often have wonderful programs for both kids & adults, they are best known for DiscoveryWorks. DiscoveryWorks is located right inside the library & according to ALPL is a “unique, hands-on learning environment with a variety of multi-sensory experiences that support varied learning styles.”
It is crucial to be aware that DiscoveryWorks has its own set of operating days/hours than the library.
Here is their current schedule:
Monday – Thursday: 10:30am – 12:30pm & 2:30pm – 5pm
Friday & Saturday: 10:30am – 12:30pm & 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Sunday: closed
There are also special evening hours on Monday & Tuesday from 6pm – 8pm.
There are two main areas of DiscoveryWorks: Wee Explorers & Mighty Explorers
Wee Explorers is a space for all ages to enjoy. There is a variety of activity tables, a super cute reading nook, & spaces to build your own brick house & garden.
Mighty Explorers are for older kiddos ages 5+. This area is completely closed off the Wee Explorers area & requires a wristband. Yellow wristbands are for children ages 5-7. This allows children to explore the area only if they are accompanied by an adult. The adult must be attentive & within arm’s reach at all times. Blue wristbands are for kids ages 8+. They are free to explore on their own or with an adult.
The Mighty Explorers area has a ton of interactive STEM related activities. There are games, puzzles, body part replicas, a kinetic sand table, & SO MUCH MORE! It is a perfect way to spend a cold winter day or whenever you feel like being indoors at an educational environment.
Another important thing to know is that the library is strict with the wristband/age policies.
From their website: PLEASE NOTE: Children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the MIGHTY EXPLORERS area at any time, even if carried or in a stroller. If you visit with children above and below the age of 5 and have only one adult, your 5-7 yr. old will need to remain in the WEE EXPLORERS area.
I’d highly recommend visiting this amazing space. The library also has a very nice children’s area in the main part of the library as well which is helpful if you’re trying to attend both sessions in one day. There is also usually take home activity kits offered at the desk as they are available.
