10 Things To Do On Martin Luther King Jr. Day - The Cleveland Moms

With most schools closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’ve compiled a list of 10 things to do downtown + the west side! Enjoy!

NORTH COAST HARBOR ICE FEST *POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER*

A wintry activation will take place between the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum. The one-day event is FREE to the public, (Martin Luther King, Jr Day) features ice displays set up on the walk way between the Science Center, Rock Hall, Harbor Verandas, and Nuevo Cleveland.

FREE ADMISSION TO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME *SOLD OUT*

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will have FREE admission for the day. Pre-register for a time slot at the link above.

ICE SKATING AT PUBLIC SQUARE

MLK Day is the LAST DAY to go ice skating at Public Square. Their hours on this day are 12pm – 6pm. It’s $12 per person & skates are included!

ICE SKATING AT NORTH PARK ICE ARENA

Join the city of Elyria with open skate at North Park Ice Arena on MLK Day from 1pm – 3pm. Adults: $5, Youth: $4, Skate Rental: $3

ICE SKATING AT NORTH OLMSTED REC ICE RINK

Join North Olmsted Rec Center for MLK Day & go ice skating! Hours for open skate are 12pm – 2:30pm. Adults: $5, Child/Student: $4, Skate Rental: $2.50

ICE SKATING AT CIVISTA BANK ICE SKATING ARENA

Make a day trip & go ice skating in Sandusky overlooking the beautiful Lake Erie on MLK Day. Hours on this day are 12pm – 7pm. Admission is FREE. Just rent skates for $5 or bring your own!

MLK WEEKEND: BE THE CHANGE AT FRENCH CREEK RESERVATION

Join Lorain County Metro Parks to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. for FREE educational entertainment and interactive activities for all ages! Donate items such as non-perishable foods, toiletries, school supplies, and blankets that we’ll distribute to local resource organizations to provide for our fellow neighbors in need – those who donate will receive a patch as a MLK badge of service for their participation!

A DREAM THAT MOVES US, AN INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL FAMILY EVENT

Join us as we honor and share the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who was one of the most influential civil rights activists of our time. First Playhouse Square helps us travel back in time to hear about Dr. King as a young boy through an interactive reading of the book “Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?” written by Lisbeth Kaiser and illustrated by Stanley Chow. Then, get moving with inspiration from Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, set to music and dance by Karamu House! Throughout the program we will explore what it means to follow our dreams and make an impact in our community and our world. A jam-packed hour, sure to inspire and entertain family members of all ages and backgrounds – don’t miss it! Registration required.

CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY VIRTUAL DISCOVERY DAY *POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER*

Get ready for an exciting day of discovery! On Monday, January 17, we will offer a variety of activities, including special programming, interactive tours of the nighttime sky, and wildlife appearances. Plus, meet our scientists and see specimens not usually on display.

Panel Discussion: NASA Glenn Research Center and the Cleveland Foundation: Bridging Cleveland’s Digital Divide
We are proud to host a virtual Panel Discussion with NASA’s Mary Lobo, director of Technology Incubation and Innovation, and Leon Wilson, Chief of Digital Innovation and Chief Information Officer at the Cleveland Foundation. Our guest speakers will discuss the efforts to bridge the Digital Divide in Cleveland, and how the knowledge gained from this endeavor may someday bring Wi-Fi to the moon. Meet members of the NASA Artemis Team as they introduce themselves in a series of short videos. This group is the most diverse team of astronauts ever selected. Half of this team are women and half are people of color. All of them will help us shape our future.

We welcome Reggie Glossett, Mechanical Engineer with Turner Constructions and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) jr2 STEMulates Advisor as he and his colleagues share about the inspiring work that NSBE is conducting with the youth in our communities.

Lift-Off Demonstration
Blast off with your family as we present “Lift-Off,” a high-flying science show that demonstrates the forces needed to launch a rocket into space.
