Lauren Egger Discusses Health Foods - The Cleveland Moms

We sat down with Lauren Egger from Healthy Mom Project. Healthy Mom Project is about providing eduction on health foods for home and school. Not only is it important that our kids learn about health food but to receive nutritious meals throughout the day.

Where are you originally from?

I was born and raised on the West side of Cleveland.

Where did you go to school and what is your current profession?

I went to Strongsville High School. I also graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor’s in Nursing. After working in the ICU for 8 years and ER for 1. Now, I am currently a stay at home Mom. Plus, I run my Healthy Mom Project blog. Through Healthy Mom Project, we are active in trying to make our schools healthier for our children.

Where do you live today and how long have you lived in this area?

We are on the outskirts of Cleveland.

How many children do you have & what are their ages?

We have 5 children (including 1 bonus daughter) – 10 yrs, 9 yrs, 6 yrs, 5yrs, 2 yrs.

What is your favorite thing about Northeast Ohio?

The Metroparks. (The earth is about 528 mHtz (energy), and a healthy body should be around 68 mHtz). All that positive, good, healthy energy that goes on for miles! It’s also free, and some of my greatest memories growing up were at the Metroparks. We like to go in the summer with our kids and hope we are making more memorable moments with them.

Take responsibility for your family’s health in to your hands. Read lots of educational books, watch documentaries and attend local health events if you can. My top favorite books are on my website.

Is there anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

My mom, and my in-laws. I could not do this without them! They all live close by and are SO helpful!

What made you decide to start Healthy Mom Project?

My own health journey has led me to feel compelled to create awareness & help parents make healthy decisions for their families. I cannot imagine doing nothing. My kids will grow up one day and I want to leave this world and my kids growing up & learning how broken the health industry is, and wondering what our generation was doing.

What do you offer through the Healthy Mom Project?

Events I have different events through out the year where I speak or feature a speaker to talk about different health topics.
WebsiteMy website is full of my favorite products we use as a family that you can order through my site to make your healthy search a lot easier!
Blog I write blogs on topics that I have found very useful and important to me. If it works for my family, I want to share with others!
Tools – I’m working on a super fun, and thought out kid lunch menu. Stay tuned!
Schools – I work with different schools to create healthier atmospheres for our children.
In our local district HMP:

  • Recently, got district to stop using Roundup, the powerful weedkiller and switch (trial) to a safe non-toxic one.
  • Implemented mindful moments
  • Is in the process of making many changes to their school lunch menu to make it more organic.
  • Implemented the ‘break room fruit box’ from Perfectly Imperfect Produce.
  • Created the “Rethink Your Drink” poster to show kids (and adults) how much sugar are in common drinks.

Community – Moms need moms. I have a private FB group that is a non-judgmental space where you can ask your questions. It can be scary, especially for first time moms to know where to turn and look for advice and tips. Always feel free to reach out to me!

If you could give moms one piece of advice about nutrition for their families, what would it be?

Eat real whole organic foods, as much as possible. (Real whole foods are what God designed our body to eat. This includes all the fruits & veggies, nuts, seeds, healthy oils like olive oil and coconut oil, grass fed meats, wild fish, organic chicken, and pasture eggs. When you buy organic, not only are you placing a demand for healthier food, you’re also avoiding all the stuff that is imperative to avoid in our diets (GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, msg, food dyes, pesticides, herbicides, etc).

Do you have a favorite book your recommend to families just starting out on their journey to healthier living?

There are so many it’s hard to choose! The Dirt Cure by Maya Shetreat-Klein. All my favorite health books are on my website

What is your favorite part about the work you do with the Healthy Mom Project?

Seeing change come about; whether it’s from a Mom changing her families lifestyle into a healthy one or getting the schools to change to create a healthier environment. Thats what it is all about; creating awareness and ultimately make changes to live a vibrant healthy life.

My favorite part about Healthy Mom Project is being a guide for parents to navigate this toxic world because living a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t be difficult.
