Kids love to help out. It gives them a sense of pride and purpose, it makes them feel like they’re a part of things and it builds their confidence. It teaches them skills. It’s good motor skills practice. Helping out also gives them a sense of community, family, and others. And, having little helpers is nice for mama too! But what chores are appropriate for each age level?Β Here are guidelines and some ideas for chores kids can do at every age.
Ages 2 & 3
throwing away trash
folding washcloths
wiping down the fronts of cabinets and appliances
putting toys away
helping to set the table
Ages 4 & 5
helping to empty the dishwasher
helping to clean their bedroom
folding towels
clearing the table
wiping walls and baseboards
sweeping the floor with a small broom and dustpan
Ages 6 & 7
sweep floors
fold laundry and switch laundry from washer to dryer
unload the dishwasher
do light dishes (handwash)
wipe down the sink, toilet, and mirror in the bathroom
Ages 8 & 9
wash dishes
dust
vacuum
take out the trash
help with meals
help with yard work
Ages 10 to 12
mow the lawn
do the laundry
make simple meals
tidy cluttered spaces
mop floors
wash and clean out the car
